Nuance

Proportional change only, and both sides must be gradual and unwilled. No instructions, no one-off events, no intentions — 卒業につれて is wrong because graduating is not gradual.

時間がたつにつれて、痛みは和らいでいった。
As time passed, the pain eased.

Not to be confused with

〜にしたがって／〜にしたがい — 〜にしたがって also means "obey"; 〜につれて never does.
〜に伴って／〜に伴い — 〜に伴って allows a sudden change and a causal reading; 〜につれて needs both sides gradual.
