Introduction to Sector-2 of the 1971 liberation war of Bangladesh

The war of independence was an important event in the history of Bangladesh when she gained independence from Pakistan. In 1947, India and Pakistan were divided.

There are two parts of Pakistan, East Pakistan (present Bangladesh) and- West Pakistan. The distance between these two parts is about 2200km. Due to this distance; there are cultural and linguistic differences between West and East Pakistan.

Pakistan's political parties gave less importance to East Pakistan than to the West. Pakistani political parties started various atrocities on East Pakistan including oppression, monopoly politics, repression policy, and imposition of the Urdu language. The population size of West Pakistan was relatively small compared to East Pakistan after the partition, but part of the national budget (75%) was spent in West Pakistan.

To overcome all these problems, the United Front was formed and East Bengal won the election in 1954 but it did not survive the conspiracy of Pakistan's central leaders.

In 1966, On behalf of the Awami League, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman presented the six-point proposal that was made but was rejected by the political leaders of West Pakistan. The main objective of the six-point demand was that Pakistan would be a federal state, giving each state full autonomy on the basis of a six-point program.

The Awami League won 160 seats in the 1970 elections and won an absolute majority. The ruling party of Pakistan used the excuse of handing over power to the victorious Sheikh Mujib after that election. This is why the intense political crisis that started ended in the war of independence of Bangladesh.

Introduction to Sector-2 of the 1971 liberation war of Bangladesh

In 1971, the entire territory of Bangladesh was divided into 11 sectors by the Government of Bangladesh to conduct the war of independence. Every sector has contributed to the independence of Bangladesh.

We will discuss Sector 2 in detail in this report. Sector 2 consisted of Dhaka, Comilla, Faridpur, and Noakhali.

The sector-2 commander was Major Khaled Mosharraf, who was later replaced by Major ATM Haider. Each sector again had several sub-sectors, while Sector-2 is divided into six subsectors. The freedom fighters and commanders of each sector and sub-sector of this sector made outstanding contributions during the Bangladesh War of Independence. About 35,000 guerrillas and about 6,000 regular forces fought the war of liberation under Sector 2.

The freedom fighters in this sector have fought against various Pakistani armies, notably, the operation in this sector completely removed the Pakistani army from the Dhaka-Chittagong highway between Comilla and Feni.

Due to the outstanding contribution of each sector, on 16 December 1971, after 9 months of the war, Bangladesh became an independent sovereign state.
